Every year, throughout "Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year " crowds keep growing both online and in foot traffic. The retail activities step up to serve the flood of customers perusing their selection of dried goods (山珍海味 “treasures of the mountains and flavours of the seas”). The staff is busy tending to old customers who return for the same ingredients and gifts they have been buying their families for years. The two retail shops down on Hong Kong street form a montage of two generations, each piecing together different flavours, images, times and memories from over almost 50+ years. And on the eve of another Chinese New Year, new changes — and new flavours — await. A short visit down memory lane.

“Hoi Mei Gai” (海味街) – the Cantonese name of “the flavours of the Sea Street” to "Hong Kong Street, Singapore"

In the '70s, Hong Kong street was a busy wholesale central to many activities. At Teck Sang, the Dried Seafood's pungent briny aroma was a norm. Many of these dried seafood goods were imported from Hong Kong, related to the "Nam Pak Hong",  a phrase that referred to trade between trading houses (hong 行) based in the south (naam 南) and the north (bak 北) in Hong Kong. Founder of Teck Sang Mr Seit Wing Yun recalls his early days when he was only 14 when his WW2 circumstances left him in Hong Kong to exercise his Entrepreneur flare on “Hoi Mei Gai” (海味街) starting his "海味舖" on "Nam Pak Hong". The sister company now based in Hong Kong on "Hoi Mei Gai" made it ideal to bring the "Best Dried Seafood" ingredients to Singapore, where we are today.
